ESTPs’ Auxiliary Function

Key ESTP Traits:

  • Active, energetic, friendly, optimistic, and fun-loving
  • Seek novelty and excitement: new sights, sounds, tastes, challenges, and experiences
  • Can be socially engaging, but generally prefer shared activities (e.g., games) over extensive talking or socializing
  • Observant of their surroundings; notice small details and subtleties in people and the environment
  • Competitive and strategic: be it in sports, business, games, gambling, or otherwise
  • “Doers”; prioritize action over prolonged reflection
  • Pragmatic; do what “needs to be done”; may show little patience for those who get bogged down in excessive deliberation or negative emotions
  • May struggle with self-discipline, at times falling prey to various forms of excess or addictive behaviors
  • Have a knack for tool use and fixing things, relying on innate logic and reason to find their way to a solution
  • Often display impressive physical strength, speed, and/or coordination, contributing to their effectiveness as athletes, dancers, performers, musicians, etc.
  • Prefer applying their reasoning in hands-on situations; think more effectively when engaging with problems in a visual, concrete way
  • Appreciate hands-on and experiential modes of learning; may struggle to stay engaged and interested in traditional academic settings
  • Enjoy people and loved ones, but may struggle with family life if it impinges on their freedom; however, most find meaning and stability in the “provider” role
  • Entertainment wise, enjoy television, movies, sports, and games; open to anything active or sensory: cooking, dining out, yard work, and various outdoor activities
  • Many pursue careers in business, sales, or finance, which carry the promise of status and financial rewards; generally prefer careers with both a “hands-on” and “technical” element, be it as athletes, pilots, chefs, deejays, mechanics, carpenters, surgeons, etc.
